How it began...

I’m a tea-drinking, fuzzy sock-wearing travel enthusiast and professional sommelier who turned a passion for wine into a fantastic career while raising three busy boys.
Like many great love stories, mine began without me being fully aware of the impact the wine world was having on me before I knew it had become an integral part of my life. The short version of my story is that I took a wine course when my 3 boys were little. That course got me out of the house one night a week to spend time learning other with grownups and away from Thomas the Tank Engine.
Little did I know that the course put me on a path that I hadn’t planned on, as I found myself completely fascinated by the stories and science behind the wines I was learning about. That one course turned into numerous others, and today, I hold multiple globally recognized accreditations and have been teaching and sharing my passion for wine for almost 20 years.
Why I do it
I founded Wine Girl Academy on the principle that learning about wine should be fun, entertaining, and easy to understand without any “snobby” wine attitude.
When I realized that women were commonly being overlooked as a niche in the wine world, I began focusing on speaking, teaching, and writing about wine in a manner that appealed to women. Wine Girl Academy was created to be a place where women can learn about wine in an uncomplicated, practical, and informative way. I strive to make learning about wine not only easy to understand but also empowering as I've seen the difference it can make in women's lives as they learn how to bring the many wonderful flavours of wine into their own homes and lives and share that knowledge with family and friends.

What’s your favourite wine?
Everyone wants to know my answer to this question, and honestly, I don’t have a favourite. While I joke and say my favorite is the style in my glass, I’ve enjoyed too many wine styles to pick just one. I would, however, say that I would be very disappointed if I never had a glass of Champagne ever again.

The best advice shared with me
Years ago, when I was just starting my wine education, an instructor told me always to let the wine do the talking and not put words in its mouth. It sounds so simple, but to be honest, it’s not. It’s easy to slip into stereotyping a wine style or grape variety and not allow each glass to speak for itself and share its flavour personality. To this day, I hear those words in my head whenever I am tasting wine and consider it some of the best advice given to me.

Must have travel accessory
I always travel with a pen that has a clip on the side of it aka metal or plastic doohickey that can keep a pen in your purse pocket. The reason I travel with one is so that if I find myself without a corkscrew I can use the pen to open the bottle. First I remove the ink insert, then use the pen body to push in the cork (carefully), and then I insert the pen into the bottle and use the clip to hold the pen on the side so that I can pour the wine easily without the cork trying to escape. Magic!
